You are automatically enrolled in Part A & B if you are receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board benefits at least four months before turning 65.
If not automatically enrolled, individuals can sign up through the Social Security Administration (SSA) website, by calling The Social Security Administration, or by visiting a local Social Security Administration office. Enrollment is available during the Initial Enrollment Period (IEP), which starts three months before the 65th birthday and lasts for seven months. If missed, enrollment can occur during the General Enrollment Period (GEP) from January 1 to March 31 each year, though late penalties may apply. Those still working with employer coverage may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) to sign up without penalties after their job-based insurance ends.
